MISSOURI LICENSING REQUIREMENTS
COSMETOLOGY, MANICURING AND INSTRUCTOR TRAINING
To be eligible to work as a Cosmetologist, Manicurist or Instructor, you must be licensed by the state in which you intend to work. In Missouri you earn your license by passing an examination given by the Missouri State Board of Cosmetology. Only students who have completed the minimum training hours required by the state, (1500 for Cosmetology, 400 for Manicuring and 600 for Instructor Training), are eligible to take this examination.
The State Board of Cosmetology will not allow a student to take the State Licensing Examination until they have paid in full all charges (including Enrollment Fees, Tuition, Books/Kits and Supplies) owed to any and all Missouri Schools of Cosmetology that the student may have attended.
License Renewal:
License renewal is required by September 30th of every odd numbered year. This is including licensure at any point (ex. If you receive your license in an even numbered year you will have to renew the following year). . In order to renew your license for Instructor Training you are required to complete 8 hours of continuing education.
Working Conditions
Instructors work in clean, pleasant surrounds in a school environment. Their work can be physically demanding because they must be on their feet for hours at a time. Instructors typically work 40 hours per week, but are required to take Continuing Education classes at a minimum every 2 years in order to renew their license. Employers look for prospective employees who are self-starters, enthusiastic, well-groomed and professional in appearance, display ability to maintain professional relationships with clients and co-workers, are dependable and responsible, follow school policies and procedures, have a good attendance record, and embrace a “team player” attitude.
